The primary responsibility of the Water Department is the maintenance of the City's water mains and sanitary sewers.

Maintenance of the water distribution system includes water towers, fire hydrants, valves as well as making taps for new services.  Another important aspect of maintaining the water distribution system is backflow prevention.

General maintenance of sanitary and storm sewers includes opening up backed up sewer mains, repairing catch basins, and identifying and repairing inflow and infiltration violations.

The Central Garage is operated by the Water Department, which maintains all of the vehicles for the City of Alliance.
