Mandatory Trash Service

What kind of service can you get for two dollars a week? Who can you get to come right to your house and provide that service for two dollars a week? It sure isn’t the gas station attendant. For the price of nearly two dollars a gallon, you get the privilege of pumping your own gas. You can’t even buy lunch anymore for two dollars. So what is this great bargain? Trash service. In the City of Alliance, J and J Refuse is the mandatory service provider. For $8.14 a month, J and J comes right to your house, picks up whatever trash and garbage you have accumulated in a week, and even takes your recycling.

And if you really want to splurge, for $12.13 a month, they will come to your backdoor and pick up the trash instead of at the curb. Senior citizens over 65 get a 9% discount, and there is even bag service for residents with smaller amounts. The bag service may be a good deal if you don’t have very much trash. For $2.00 a month plus $1.20 per purchased bag, you can still have trash service at very little cost. You can buy the bags right at J and J’s Alliance office at 500 E. Main St. Or you can order the bags and have them mailed to you from their Dover office by calling 1-800-201-0005.

In the City of Alliance, it is mandatory for every single family home and duplex to use and be billed by J and J Refuse for their trash pickup. Codified Ordinance Chapter 937 states that; "All residents of the city shall subscribe to the trash and rubbish collection service of the City’s contractor." J and J is the City’s contractor.

In the case of a duplex, both occupants of the duplex must pay individually for trash service. You can’t just put it out on the curb all together. That isn’t fair to your neighbor who pays for his own service or to J and J. Owners of housing units comprised of three units or more are not mandated to use J and J. Those are considered commercial properties and the owner can contract with any provider for trash service.

The City of Alliance has several reasons for mandating trash service. One, of course, is to keep our city cleaner. Another is for the cost savings our residents are realizing. We estimate that over a six-year period, city residents will save a total of nearly $1.5 million over the previous service provider.

Now, here’s the real deal. For those of you out there who have been receiving trash service at little or no cost, here’s your chance to fess-up and come clean. No questions will be asked. This is a one-time amnesty offer. If you call J and J at 330-823-8155 and make arrangements for trash service, you will only be charged for last quarter and next quarter. Even if you’ve been putting your trash out with your neighbor’s for two years. No, they are not going to forgive your back bill. This offer is for folks who have never signed up for service and want to sleep better at night. If you have any other questions about the trash service, call the Mayor’s office at 330-821-3110.
