Department Responsibilities
Criminal Cases
The Law Department is responsible for the prosecution of criminal cases which arise within the City of Alliance and surrounding Stark County Townships of Lexington, Washington, Marlboro, and Paris as well as Villages of Minerva Robertsville and Lima. Misdemeanor and felony cases occurring in these areas may be filed in the Alliance Municipal Court for adjudication.
Misdemeanor cases are fully adjudicated by the court through trial and sentencing. Felony cases are prosecuted through the preliminary hearing stage and may be bound over to the Stark County Common Pleas Court for further adjudication.
Criminal Offense Reports
The Law Department reviews criminal offense reports presented by the Alliance Police Department, Marlboro Township Police Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Stark County Sheriff’s Office, Stark County Dog Warden, and Stark County Park Rangers, as well as other state and federal law enforcement officers.
Law Enforcement Assistance
The Law Department assists law enforcement by providing legal guidance and advice, obtaining search and arrest warrants, securing subpoenas for evidence and witnesses, and working with victims of crimes.
City Representation
The Law Department also represents the City of Alliance in civil cases filed in state and federal court, prepares and reviews contracts, drafts legislation, and provides legal advise to all city officers, elected officials, and various city boards.
